Hi,

Here's a snapshot of the Mandelbrot set, using one of POV's new patterns for the
interior. It shows the conformal (angle-preserving) nature of complex numbers.

Functions were used to compute it. Unfortunately, POV-Ray crashes at 1024
iterations... I'm not sure why...

The exterior coloring is normalized using code from this informative page:
http://linas.org/art-gallery/escape/escape.html. It would look much smoother
than this, but color_maps and JPEG compression conspire to make it not so.

I'll try to upload some shots from a MSet/Burning Ship hybrid I found, soon.

~Sam

The Burning Ship fractal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Ship_fractal) is
characterized as an MSet whose real and imaginary parts are made absolute before
squaring. As it's own fractal, it's quite chaotic, and you're lucky to ever find
much interesting in it at all.

But as a hybrid, more interesting things tend to happen. In this (fairly common
from what I've found) shot, we see the MSet and its tricorn sitting
side-by-side, connected by Burning Ship's unique plankwork.

One way to make an MSet/Burning Ship hybrid is to find the minimum value between
the real and imaginary parts after squaring. Nothing happens initially, but when
you subtract a value from one function, the whole thing starts to cleave.

The cleft causes mirroring (from the absolute values), and this results in all
sorts of weirdness. One such occurrence is displayed in the attached. I think
I've seen this somewhere else...

Another shot from one of the variations...

This one comes from a place I call Glynn Reef. The formations tend to resemble
Glynn fractals (http://eldar.mathstat.uoguelph.ca/dashlock/ftax/Glynn.html),
though there are other places which bear a stronger resemblance...

An area made of Glynn fractals.

Another one before crashing. It was rendered before I tried the normalized
smoothing method. It's an older variation that produced some cool structures, on
occasion. Sort of looks like an alien beetle exodus...

I should probably upload the code someday, since bitrot is a real thing :)

Incredible Sam... all the images are beautiful, but I prefer the
hybrid-o one, is a kind of "underwater lighted window" effect. Will you
someday release the sources?
;-)

I have a feeling it's got something to do with an friggin' big number of
iterations... :p

I find this one particularly amazing and beautiful. The colors and the
atmosphere make me think to some paintings by Folon.
