My grand-children have enjoyed playing this music box for quite some time.
I thought it might be an interesting subject to model. I'm reasonably
happy with the modeling so far. I still need to add a handle and record
storage slot on the back, but you can't see that from this angle. I'm not
completely happy with the textures though. I can't seem to get an orange
that as bright as the real thing. The other colors are a bit flat too.
Any suggestion or comments would be appreciated.

Wow, that brings back memories....we used to have one of those when I was
a kid. Good job!

Not having the original in front of me, I would say that the colors are
excellent and the plastic feel of the toy very well rendered.
However, you may want to experiment with phong rather than specular and add
a tiny bit of red to the orange?
It is partly a matter of taste, but I generally prefer specular to phong,
and then play with different roughness values, but in this particular case,
phong might do the trick.

You may need to use a small amount of reflection.
Try altering the brillance.
Those toys tend to have high colour saturation, no blue in the orange. Maybe a
little more green to make it yellower.

The human eye has 3 kinds of cones,
short, medium and long frequency (S, M, L).
S cones recieve blue best. M cones recieve
green best. L cones recieve yellow best.
Since you can't reproduce a good red with
BGY, painters opted for RYB in the 18th
century, most colors can be mixed from
that with the exceptions of bright green,
magenta, and cyan. That is because when
mixing RL paint the luminance decreases.
Modern monitors mix light from pixels,
so the luminance is additive. Unfortunately,
orange is difficult to mix from green and
red while keeping high luminance.
Try color <1,0.25,0>*2, or something
saturated like that. Maybe tweak the
finishes a bit smoother.

Try increasing the diffuse value of the orange finish. A slightly darker or
less saturated green might make a better contrast with the orange.

Cute little lovable - povable! - toy... but how did you scan the labels?
Or are they even procedural... I'm curious!
See you on www.khyberspace.de !

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and comments. I increased the color
saturation to rgb <4.0, 0.625, 0.0>, increased the specular and decreased
the roughness. The orange is pretty close to the original now.
Yadgar, I scanned the label using a standard PC scanner, then used a
graphics paint program to crop and clean up the colors.
Thanks again Jim, Thomas, Alain, Tim, Cousin Ricky, and Yadgar.

Did you remove the label from the case before - or did you scan a
photograph? I can't help finding it difficult to place an object of such
a shape smoothly on the scanner plate...

I just placed the music box on the scanner. I had to touch up the colors a
little, but it scanned pretty well.
David.
