Here's a web page banner I'm posting in connection with a post I'm about to
make in the "general" newsgroup. Critiques welcome.

Hi Mike!
I'm not sure whether I like that perspective with respect to the planned
use as a banner. IMHO looking straight down onto the text would look
better. I'd probably even use an orthographic camera for such things,
although it kind of eliminates the 3D effect...

Yes, I know what you mean about the perspective. I was trying to show off
the soft shadows and it didn't look right from above. Maybe i'll lift the
letters off the plane a bit to see if that helps. Or, possibly stand the
letters up and view them from the front. I don't want to go totally
orthographic in this case, since I want to maintain the 3D look. I find
that setting the camera back and using a small camera angle helps keep it
looking "close" to orthographic but not quite (if that makes sense).

I did some titles for a quicktime slideshow I was putting togeather. I found
that looking straight on, with the text just slightly raised above the plane
using an area_light off to the left looked quite nice .... give it a try!

I too have been building web content for an overhaul of my website. My menu
/ banner objects are floating just above the page plane. I didn't want to
use an orthographic camera, so I've used quite a long-angle setting with
the vanishing point in the centre of a logo in the top left corner of my
page (the camera is in line with the logo object and the look_at point has
been shifted towards the bottom-right). I think this gives a nice 3D effect
whilst keeping a document-y feel.

(there's no content yet, it's just a preliminary version to make sure my
includes and links were working).
I've lit the whole affair using pure radiosity because the area lights
weren't giving the effect I wanted.

To keep the 3d effect so prominent at a natural perspective, could it be
vertical along the side?
