Okay a few changes here, I'll just run through them briefly:
-tweaked the wave shape to be more uneven (by adding f_spotted) and to have
more interesting breaking wave patterns (by compressing the ridged_mf
pattern on the y axis, so waves tend to fold over more).
-adjusted camera & ring position relative to the waves to get an interesting
wave crest in the middle of the view.
-improved foam, same pattern as before but tweaked following suggestions,
thanks guys!
-who put that boat there? as I mentioned in my first post my water has a
really nice under-water shading, but there was nothing underwater to show it
off, so I built this simple boat object and thrust it forcefully beneath the
waves.
-mist, you can barely see it but it helps the distance look distant.
-no radiosity - I turned it off because it wasn't doing much apart from
slowing things down, though I need to improve my fake-radiosity lights
because the bottom of the ring is now black. :-/
The thing that's bugging me now is that patch of sky we can see looks way
too sunny to justify the waves let alone the sinking ship! But it looks
gorgeous reflecting off the waves... I'll try a dramatic sky and see how it
looks.
Render time down to a mere 2h 24m, thanks to the aforementioned removal of
radiosity.

I am deeply impressed, Tek... This is the best rough sea I have seen since
Marc Jacquier's!!

the boat in it. IM(not so)HO the sea is not that rough and it would not
interact with the boat the way it does. So it destroys the illusion. That
aside
the sea looks great. The smooth spots in the sea look realistic and in
keeping with the waves. I would expect to see some streaming spray if the
wind got any higher.
Criticism aside it really does bring back the North Sea, Maybe an oilrig or
a supply boat in the background. And the sky can be sunny, as you have it,

If you can find models for them, I think some sort of sea life such as
sharks or whales would be much better in this scene. That boat makes it
feel like it's a toy tugboat in the bathroom.

You should really improve on the ship. This image has a great
potential.

Here's a larger, stormy version.

I don't think anybody's saying the ship looks good! :)
I threw it in there to show off the undersea effects, but it definitely
suffers from not having any interaction with the water. I'll probably shove
it further away from the camera and deeper in the water so it's not so
obvious.

Make me wanna help. The water is great.
I would keep this version but damage the ship a little more.
It looks to new or like a toy. Did anyone mention this?
