My second post. And this forum is so educational; just look how I've
improved since my first post!

OK, I'm going for this scene from the movie "The Shining", a reference
screen shot from the movie is here:
http://www.archiviokubrick.it/film/shining/foto/danny03.jpg .

I'm doing without Danny and his cars (because I'm not that good at meshing
yet!). Just showing the ball that has rolled up. I would like to improve
this by having the paint on the walls in the hallway reflect the lights
back like they do in the reference movie frame. I've tried various different
features in the "finish" section, but haven't hit on the right
combination, yet. Also tried tweaking the lights everywhich-way. I have to
be careful not to overexpose the hallway, the lights are pretty close
together. Any suggestions?

this scene is begging for radiosity!
other than that, my only suggestion is to make the lights a little more
yellowish/orange'ish

you're on the way to perfection!

The wall are covered with a prety glossy paint. Have you tryed with specular or phong?
With
reflection or blured reflection? You can get blured reflection by avaraging several
normal
statements all randomly translated. Beter to use a loop for that.

When I first saw your picture, the carpet was a dead ringer: it instantly
reminded me of The Shining [I don't know why... but it is quite a
distinguishable pattern :P]

So far it looks great, but as someone above stated, it could really benefit
from the wonders of radiosity. Kudos!

Well, I followed the suggestions and the results blow me away! Radiosity on,
hall lights "yellowed". Also tweaked several textures and normals. The
walls still don't reflect the *exact* same highlight, but they're as close
as I'm going to get it this pass.

A few notes:
That's gotta be the most famous carpet pattern in film history! It's very
distinct, and it was the easiest part of the picture (simple geometric
lines snapped to guides in Gimp). The carving around the elevators is
supposed, in the movie, to be Navajo/Apache artwork that's themed
throughout the hotel. So I did that in monochrome in Gimp, drawing freehand
- and it happily looks just about primitive enough! - Then use as a
heightfield in POV.

The ball - surprised a die-hard Kubrick fan hasn't mentioned it yet. In the
movie, to the best I can recollect and concurring from what online synopsis
of it say, was a tennis ball (the same one Jack Nicholson is pounding off
the walls in his study earlier). Well, I mis-remembered it as a child's
ball at first, then decided I liked it better when I dug up what the real
ball was. This one looks like a child's ball - logical for the twin ghost
girls ("Come and play with us, Danny!...") to roll to the live child. Also,
it looks like the kind of ball you might see in the movie "Toy
Story"....which recycles this carpet pattern on the floor of Sid's house!
So I figured this would complete the circle...

Thank you all for your feedback!

If you ever get to Portland Oregon, take a side trip to Mount Hood (a
couple of hours ride away). There you can go into the Timberline Lodge,
and check the whole place out exactly. It is a wonderful building. If
you are flush, you can even get a room there and ski essentially any
day of the year (Hood has a chunk of glacier, so snow and skiing (not
necessarily _good_ skiing) is always available at some elevation. I've
been skiing on the fourth of July, just to say I did so.
