Hi!

This is a small "preview" I rendered last night. The picture still requires
some work. If someone has an idea, how I could create some moss or ivy on
the walls, please tell me! I asked a question regarding this in the
"newusers" group.

I think about replacing the walls by bushes or at least positioning the
trees in different places.. Maybe the right one more in the middle or
something like this.. What do you think about that?

Hello
I think you better keep the walls for the ambiance...
It seem's that you don't use radiosity, or the settings aren't accurate 
enough ? I think that can resolve the "problem" of the (very) dark 
shadows on the right part of the image...
But that looks interresting for this time ;-)

Yes, no radiosity was used for this picture. No photons where shot. This
preview rendering as you see it there (except that I converted it to gif)
took 8 hours and 45 minutes on my athlon 1800+ system! Even though it is
really small (only 512*384 pixel)! I guess, that it will take much longer
with radiosity and photons...

What program did you use for your trees?

As a side note, I recommend you use jpeg insted of gif. Gif has a 256 
color limit that sucks for this kind of images.

Well, photons only make sense if you need actual light reflection or
refraction. To avoid radiosity, why not google a little about three point
lighting? Two shadowless lightsources with lower values than your average
lightsource with shadows might do a good enough job to get rid of that
utterly black areas. You'd also have some control that way.

Thank you, Tim! I googled a bit but I ain't sure, if three point lighting is
what i want in this scene.. I am a bit afraid, that more than one light
source would let the image look too artificial like most of the pictures I
saw as examples for this technique.

I guess I will use radiosity and just accept, that it renders 3 days.. ;-)

I really like your idea for this scene!  :-)  Personally, I like the walls, 
but if you want to break it up a little, you could also add a door.  Just a 
thought.

The blades of grass seem a little bit large and/or thick.  I would try 
making them a little bit thinner (less wide), and maybe a little shorter. 
But again, that's up to you.

Referring to your response to Tim's post, it seems strange (to me) that this 
scene would take 8 hours to render on an Athlon 1800+ without any radiosity. 
Do you happen to have any complex (or somewhat complex) "difference" 
operations being performed on the walls?  Other than that, things like 
area_lights and focal blur would slow down a render, but it doesn't appear 
that you're using either of those.  If the walls are isosurfaces, that could 
also slow things down (not that iso-surfaces are a bad idea).

Also, make sure you have Gena's modified version of TomTree 
(http://propro.ru/go/Wshop/povtree/tomtree-1.5.zip).  It speeds up tree 
creation by quite a bit.

Tweaking can always be done later.  I'm not sure what your current 
skill-level is, so I'm sorry if I'm oversimplifying something.  Radiosity is 
very difficult to master, but POV-Ray has an excellent tutorial on it.

I really like this scene though.  I'll be quite interested in seeing the 
final outcome.  Post it here when you're done!  I hope my suggestions have 
been helpful.

(Also, JPEG is the preferred method for posting here, simply because not 
everyone has broadband, I assume.)

Thanks a lot! I thought about using a door or window. But this would mean
that I would have to do a landscape behind it.. And it renders slow enough
without.. ;-)

I had a photo as reference. This rather large and thick type of grass exists
and so I think, I will not change it.

I started a "full render" with radiosity at 800x600 pixel. It is rendering
15:45 now and reached only 37%...

No. The walls are created by a macro from Steven Pigeon. As far as I looked
at it, he uses superellipsoids to create the bricks.

I don't use any of these features.

I used the radiosity block from the insert menu. count is 35... Please don't
say, that I need to set to 100! ;-)

I am new to povray. I used it sometimes in the last years but never was able
to get good results. This picture is the best work I ever did..

Thank you a lot! I will post it, if my machine doesn't crash before it is
done.. ;-) If the result ain't what I wanted, your suggestions will
definitely proof very helpful!

I don't like the jpeg-artifacts but I will post jpegs from now on!

Very promising first post.  Technically accomplished.  For me the main 
stopping point is a relatively minor thing, the grass.  What you have 
just doesn't correspond to anything familiar to me.  The rest is  quite 
believable.
