No lights, no radiosity... just HDRI reflecions. Still, it took 7 hours!
Maybe because the gears are 512x512 heighfields, and the texture uses
micronormals... the render used 343 focal blur samples to smooth them
out, and then it was resized down at 50% to help a bit more with the
grainy look. I tried first Uberpov blurred reflections, but guessing
from the first block rendered, it would have needed a few weeks...
BTW, I reused here the placements from my coins scene using the Bullet
Physics Playground... just adapted the gears sizes to the coins sizes.

As ever a very nice image. But I notice that some of the gears are lifted in a
way. They doesn't seem to lay at each other but floating a bit in the air.
Best regards,
Michael

Look closely. I think some of the coppery gears are being held aloft by silvery
ones, which are hard to distinguish from the ground plane.

That's true, but Michael is also right: I didn't match perfectly the
original coins thickness, and so ALL the gears are floating a tiny bit.

Hi Jaime,
First of all you make me ill with your PovProwess and you always will.
That said. This image might keep me up at night.
Nice job. and as always, keep up the great work.
