Well I'm almost packed up, but before the computer gets boxed up I
thought I'd do a little raytracing, because I don't know when I'll be
setup in my new location. It's a work in progress, but I like where it
appears to be headed. The open crock is something (lathe object) I've
used in other scenes, but I reworked the texture. BTW: the leaf is a
photo of I snapped the other day (fall colors almost all gone)

The floor tiles look very neat - are they flattened superellipsoids or
isosurfaces... or heightfields? And how did you achieve the blurred
reflection? Did you use HDRI?

Thanks ... I used a macro by Sam Benge (OTO.inc) ... it calls
Round_Box_Union that's in shapes.inc. The tile texture has a very slight
granite normal (granite 1e-3 poly_wave 0.35) that helps create the
blurred reflection ... and yes I used a HDR image textured on the inside
of a sphere to provide the environment that you see reflected on the
floor ... it's an image of an abandoned paper-mill

OK ... so the acorn didn't turn out like I wanted, maybe with a bit of
tweaking, but the shell turned out nice. It's a parametric I found on
Mike's page: http://www.econym.demon.co.uk/ I also played around a
little with the positioning of the HDR map ... a bit more pleasing
results, don't you think?

The scene is very pleasant, what kind of texture have you used for the vase?

Yes, nicely done indeed. Maybe you remember the SeaShell plugin for
Moray, built by Philippe Gibone (2003)? In the end I have not used it
much but it was a neat application.
The position of the hdr map is indeed better. To make better use of the
tile reflection you could also move some objects in order to show their
reflections too. Now the objects seem without reflection.

two separate textures in a texture_map. used agate to distribute the
pigment and for the normal as well ... cylindrical warp.

never used Moray ... I just used the wood pattern for the pigment and a
granite micro-normal. uv_mapping for the overall texture.

yikes ... didn't notice that until you pointed it out. Guess I need a
bit more practice with variable reflection. I'm also using exponent, and
falloff on the tile floor.
