Like posfan12 I have been working for a while now on an imaginary city,
partly inspired by the stories of Lord Dunsany, partly by the Lankhmar
of Frank Herbert. Gancaloon is the site of my Iskander images which have
started to appear here and on the TC-RTC site since 2006/2007.
Eavesdropping was the very first one.

A few landmarks are in place: the city wall and gates, the Old Palace on
the right; the temple/market (red box) location of Eavesdropping and
site of the Sea Harbour; the temple zone in the center; the Rver Harbour
to the left. The Yann flows at left towards the sea in the background.
The other side of the river is not yet implemented.

The landscape is a height_field function, first drawn in GIMP (height
levels), then processed in GeoControl, and exported as a tga file. Each
square represents 50 m. All "finished" objects are built in Silo and
exported through Poseray as mesh2 objects. Axes through the origin are
added for more easy location.

Impressive project that will keep you busy for a while ;)

I'm not sure about the scale though ... the wall appears
to be about 20m high, which would seem a bit excessive. Also,
possibly it should follow the fine structure of the terrain
more strongly on such uneven ground?

Promising idea... same with my city concepts (Port Whatmough and
Kandabul) on fictional planets/moons! A whole self-designed planet
(probably with contour maps developed to heightfields, spherical meshes
and then converted to isosurfaces... a few years ago Christoph Hormann
came up with a macro to do exactly this!) to place the city/cities on
would be really cool!

See you in Khyberspace - www.khyberspace.de

Thank you indeed. I am not in a hurry to finish, and this is primarily
intended as a support for future scenes inside. I doubt if I shall be
able to fill a complete city, although that would be cool ;-)

Towers are about 20 m high and walls about 15 m. Not really excessive I
believe. I based myself on designs from ancient Mycene and Mesopotamia,
and also the city of Antioch. This is not far beyond the mark. Also,
considering that the pillar height of my temple in Eavesdropping is 20 m
(and those are the correct measurements) these walls are fully in
accordance. Well, anyway, this is fantasy :-) But you are right to
mention this because some proportions have to be kept.

Thanks indeed. These kind of dreams/ideas are always extremely ambitious
at the start and soon come up against scores of difficulties :-)

It doesn't matter. It is the dream that is important.

<grin> no reason to ;-) You are on right track too.

An updated version of Gancaloon.

On the promontory at left, the citadel has been established. Like in
most of my work, I use historical backgrounds for my architecture. The
citadel uses the ground plan of the Mycenean citadel of Tiryns, in
Greece. The palace at right is inspired by the labyrintic palaces of the
Minoean period in Crete. The bridge is inspired by the Ponte della
Gaietta near Millesimo, Italy.
