1000 area lights from a light dome illuminating the scene, and giving the sphere
in the middle a set of phong highlights that simulate a diffuse reflection. The
sphere also has a blurred real reflection as well, giving a nice doubled
reflection effect. The floor is a blurry reflector as well, but is still a
little grainy.

The scene is made up of 1000 individual renders, each taking about 12 seconds.
Total wall-time was about 2 hours across two CPUs (2.4GHz Core Duo).

Cheers,
Edouard.

And here are four of the 1000 frames used in the final composition.

Each one has three random lights chosen from the light dome. It's hard to see,
but each frame is offset to give the depth of field effect. The offset is done
via trace() from a source image (the shape of the iris).

Cheers,
Edouard.

You got some interesting results here.

We often use minimal scenes to do comparative tests, it is instructive
to be reminded at how much more dramatic the illustration in a more
full-fledged scene.

I gotta laugh at your title by the way. It may transend this particular
post.
