Does the lighting look believable in this scene?

They both look believable in certain ways. I'd say the first is closer, but
would be brighter and whiter (with less blue aquired from outside). That's
just my gut feeling though.

Both very nice, but I think the first one looks more like daylight. However,
I do think your outdoors should be much, much brighter, maybe even
completely saturated. You'll probably have to lower the radiosity
brightness in that case, and antialiasing around the window frame will
suddenly get very hard, but still...

Both are realistic and beleivable.
The first is more like our eyes compensate for the contrast.
The second is more like a photograph where you underexpose everything in order
to have the brightest parts a correct exposition.
To increase the realism, you may need to increase the light's intensity, as well
as the brightness of the outside "worls".

You know you've been raytracing too long when you look at real clouds and
criticise their media and radiosity settings.

Indeed, it does.
However, the size of the room seems small. This could be due to the size
of the ball (I'm assuming that it's a moderately-sized beach ball) or
the dimension ratio of the room.
Some rooms are that small, though. Good for a playroom.

Ball scale is probably way out of whack... 2ft across if the room were
10x10...

In London it is a room with a view (and a beach ball)
As others have said, brighter outside and reduce the reflections on the
floor and give it some normals. It is begging for normals to break up the
perfection.

I've had beach balls going from 2' to 3' in diameter. I've never had any smaler
than 2'!
