The subject isn't a poetic one: I lost the code for that rain! Don't
ask how I managed to delete it... I can't remember. Anyhow, I intended
to rewrite it as generic macros, so I'm posting the image to force my
self to start with the rewrite.
The base scene is a second version of my old "town street" scene,
this time doing all the modeling/composition on Wings3D and using
POV-Ray for just lighting and special effects like the rain. The
textures are all UV painted with photos using The Gimp. The rain is just
cylinders and tori with tricky textures and repeated randomly. The
splashes are traced against the objects in the scene for placement.

The rain is fantastic, as are the images. Sorry about your code.

What can one expect other than a truly, deeply interesting image fringing on
perfection, when the author is called Jaime? :-)
The rain is very convincing and I sincerely hope you will find the incentive
to write the code again (so that we, lazy povers, can show off our skills to
the ignorant world at large, of course).
The textures are very convincing, except on the left-hand corner, where the
image_map shows too much its origin. This is a common thing to happen, I
found out, when the camera comes relatively too close to the object, thus
destroying the effect.
Bravo, Jaime! Keep up the good work, like we use to say :-)
Thomas

de news: 46274120@news.povray.org...
That's a great image indeed. As others said, rain is convincing but the
close 'drop' in the top middle.
I usually don't recomend focal blur for outdoor scenes but with these light
conditions, it is almost mandatory.
Now this is a dead-end image (sorry couldn't resist) as you lost the code...

Stunning, really stunning. Love those localized streaks of water running
off the building roofs. And the splashes in the street-- wonderful. (Do I
assume correctly that they are made using an individual normal pattern,
multiplied and averaged using a normal_map or something similar? Or are
they 3-D? I've used a similar normals scheme before.. not as nice as in
your image, though...and it wasn't easy to figure out!)

Oops! You did say they were traced on; so they must be 3-D objects. Very
realistic! I think I'll go back to my own scene and change a few
things...thanks for the inspiration!

Perfect image.
Only one thing to say. With such a rain, the atmosphere would be more
brumous far off. The lights of the lamp-posts seems to have the same power.
Perhaps if you decrease this light power you will obtain still a more
realistic vue.
Bravo Jaime.

Yes, and I was stupid enough to put the worst textures on the foreground
buildings... :)

Yes, I was lazy and didn't try to find a better random seed...

With so many reflective/refractive drops all over the scene, it gets very
slow when using focal blur... but I will try, so I will have an excuse to
use XRS again with the two dual core machines.

:) ...not really: I only lost the rain code, so the rewrite is not that
hard.

Yes, the splash is half a torus with a tricky texture (see the attached
pic) Is one of these strange ideas you get from nowhere...
The localized streaks are just manually placed, but they used trace to
detect surfaces below, to place splashes too...
