Posted here for the benefit of anyone not looking at the IRTC. (And because
I'm too impatient to wait for voting to end before I get comments on it!)

Okay, although I'm very pleased with this image, I didn't think it was all
that amazing. However it has so far fooled 3 people at work into thinking it
was a photo! (these are computer games professionals, not laymen). In
fairness none of these people were paying much attention, they just saw it
on my screen and wondered where it is in the world. But still it's the first
time I've had that reaction to one of my images :)

So, I submit it to you folks as a curiosity. Fool your friends, be the life
of the party, etc.

Comments/critiques welcome.

Incredible - looked like a photo to me too! Can't find anything technical
IMO that gives it away, except that fire does not burn in seawater, unless
some potassium dropped in there, o'course...

Very well done - definitely good enough for the IRTC, maybe even to win?
Would get my vote.

Realism is fantastic .. however I'm not so keen on the composition ..
including the fire in the foreground would lead me to expect that it
would be in focus .. as it's slightly out, I feel that the whole photo
is out (until I look)

I'd prefer the fire to be focussed and the dino-rock to be slightly out.

Cheers!

It is an original interpretation of the four elements, Tek. The fire burning
in the water is a bit strange, but in the alchemist concept perhaps not
entirely unusual?
Well done!!

Well most of the wood's above the water level, my thinking is that the tide
is coming in, about to put the fire out.

That's what I thought of too, but then wouldn't there be some steam/smoke
coming off the bottom?

Interesting...

The wood doesn't seem to be on fire, despite being surrounded by it. And
the flames don't seem to cast any light on the surrounding rocks. But
other than that...

Actually, that's the best CG flames I've ever seen. How did you do that?

I have to second the above - certainly the most photo-realistic raytrace
I've ever seen! Personally, I like the slight blurred effect - it makes it
more real. Perfectly focused and framed photographs are very difficult to
take - the blur is suggestive of the flames' dancing and the waves rolling
in, and also hides that crisp 'CG' look that so many otherwise incredible
images possess.

Now that I come to think about it, most 'nice' effects obtained using
photography are actually artifacts of an imperfect recording - the quest
for photo-realism is a matter of hunting down lens and film glitches. And
then shooting them, stuffing them and mounting them so they look pretty
hanging on the wall.

With regard to the flames in water - could be firewood soaked in gasoline?
:)

Bill, not worthy

Yeah that's kinda my thoughts on the subject too: When you take a photo you
go to great lengths to avoid these errors, but when it's CG you should
intentionally create them so it loses the perfection people expect in CG :)
