Hi all!

My creative juices are pretty tied up at the University, where I'm modelling
in Maya (soon to go to rigging phase), programming in C++, OpenGL and
OpenInventor (soon to go to a self-chosen task, e.g. a small board-game or
such) and a radio play (currently working on a story)...

Nontheless, I love to doodle around with Silo every now and then and this is
what I decided to model a few days ago. Modelling didn't take that long, but
rendering did. Required lots of passes to get the scattering right, and then
I needed to make use of lightgroups to have the candle actually cast light
onto the plane. Playing a little with negative lightsources to get the
proper shadow.

Anyways, I'm stuck at the moment and don't know what to add or change, but
I'll just take my time with it. Wanted to show it here even though it'll
probably take a few weeks to get completed. :-)

Regards,
Tim

Great job! You got everything right, the color and transparency of the solid
wax, the flame, the reflection in the liquid wax... but, IMHO, this is a
picture of a lit candle being illuminated from above by a spotlight. I
think there's no way the flame, low as it is in the candle, can actually
cast light onto the table. This being said, 2 thumbs up again !!!

Thanks for the thumbs up! :-)

Yup, the light is coming from spotlights from above. Otherwise, the plane
would receive no lights whatsoever from the candle, as it is all being
absorbed by the candle. Maybe I should make the shadow larger, and the light
somewhat weaker, so that it looks like it's being scattered out of the
candle. I'll see what I can come up with.

Regards,
Tim

you're welcome :)

oh, ok... hmmm, then maybe you'll have to set the candle next to...
something, a wall, another object so that the candle casts light onto it
instead of the plane underneath... I truly believe that with a dimmer
lighting, this picture would truly stand out and capture the warmth and
atmosphere surrounding a candle.
