I abandoned the blob pattern and function{ } based thunderhead approach for
a slightly more cumbersome but faster rendering one. I am not completely
satisfied with it yet, but with a full scene and other clouds I think it
would do pretty well.
Full scene is very, very WIP, will post when deemed acceptable.

PS. this took about 7.5 hours on a P4 running at 3.4GHz

Looks, too small to me, and too white. The thunderheads around here are big
and scary.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the approx. height is 30,000 pov units,
and the camera is about 15000 units away... the darkening can be done via
adjustment of emission parameters, the scarieness is the WIP part...

Not bad IMO.

BTW, I was doing some experiments with your posted media based clouds and
found that very nice clouds can also be made with scattering only, i.e.
without emission and absorption. Seems to me to be nearer to the "physical
reality"...

I could post the reworked SDL code, if somebody is interested.

Looks good. Looks better inverted (upside-down). Text book description
is usually anvil shaped.

Ouch.

See p.text.scene-files and have fun.
