This might be the final version of this image, I'm very pleased with the way
it's turned out. In any case I'm going to leave it like this while I work on
some other ideas I had for this round, and maybe change it some more nearer the
deadline.
Changes in this version: I've brightened the blue sky, which has increased the
radiosity in the scene and the reflection on the glass (I'm not sure I like this
so I might change it back to the darker version). Also I've done a lot of work
on the skin texture, adding veins and making him look a bit sunburnt. Plus I
changed the hair but I'm still not sure about it.
Questions? Comments?

I really like this image, but the left hand might
look better if it is rotated a bit to show the thumb
more clearly.
Also, the cone-like shape of the fallen sand might
look better if it slopes gradualy into the surface.
Other than that, great image!
Cheers,
Peter

Wow, that sunburn looks real! Much better, the skin isn't so shiny and
blends in with the background better. Only noticable thing now to me is
as someone pointed out above, his left arm/hand is at an odd angle to
the camera, makes it look like there's no wrist, just fingers coming out
of the arm.
Great idea, I love the concept.

Yeah, that left arm's not working too well is it?
I've just done this test render. Looking at it from this angle makes it even
more obviously wrong. Plus it reveals the fact that the veins bear no relation
to human anatomy, but let's not worry about that ;)
Okay, time for a little more work on the hand...
Thanks

Okay, slightly tweaked the lighting, the skin tone, and I've improved the left
hand.
This time, I think it's finished :)

You *really* improved it :) It's much better than before.
A comment: You should add more sand on the top part. That man doesn't look
so near death and that sand will finish falling in some seconds. I mean,
that man looks like having more than 2 seconds of life remaining.

I'm impressed you noticed this problem. You see, there's a fundamental
contradiction that faced me when making this image: I want him to be very close
to death (for the drama of the scene) but I also want him to look as realistic
as I can make him. And the trouble is people when they're about to die of
exposure in the desert don't look much like real people! Plus if he was paler
his colours would start to look too close to the sand colour and that would
unbalance the scene.
So, I compromised by making him look fairly normal but a bit sunburnt. It's
something of a cop-out but I didn't think anyone would notice! Well done for
spotting it.
Unfortunately this image is now definitely finished, because I'm getting started
on a povcomp entry which will eat up all my free time. I really want that PC!

Maybe a slight adjustment would be enough. You could make his irises
lighter, near white. Death is in the eyes.

Ooh, good idea!
...well it's subtle but it definitely works. Thanks for the suggestion!

That's better then his firm look he had before.
Although the professional renderers like Maya and others, can do now
foto-realistic faces on the part of skin texture, hair, etc, it seems
they still have trouble with the eyes. The eyes on such a raytraced
model immediately betrays that it's not real. The SFX guys of the matrix
2, must have been happy that all those Mr.Smiths were wearing
sunglasses, even in the rain. Anyway, what I want to say is that eyes
are very important. You can make the guy more dead or alive by just
tweaking the eye-color.
Back to your picture, I think the irises could still be lighter, over-do
it a little, if you think this is just a little to light, then it's
probably good. Look at it the next day and you'll see (at least that's
my experience with 'micro-tweaking').
Also the guys kidney and lever functions are probably out, so the white
of his eyes should probably look more yellow (like the sand surrounding
him).
Hope this is helpful.
