Sorry about the size. The sharp lines unfortunately do not survive
compression or resizing.
Very excited about this one. Several weeks work. No light sources or
radiosity. All finishes are ambient 1. Though "flat", this image is very
much intended to be "seen" in 3D. 4D actually if you count the intended
suggestion of activity.
The file name reveals an exciting (to me) element of this particular
picture...utility. This will be used as a clock face.

Nice, I love this type of pseudo 2D images.
Jerome
PS: BTW, with the right options, it compresses to a 175K jpeg with
very few artefacts: http://jeberger.free.fr/tmp/clock_full.jpg

a watch face for a watch you are making? or what? that's pretty cool. did
you get this look and feel by using a certain type of camera or is it
geometrically contructed to look this way? (does that make sense?)

Fantastic. Do you plan on making some "fake 2D" tutorials with your
techniques? Look forward to it.

That looks great. What program did you use? I tried to compress it with
Irfanview and had no luck. I'm not happy with my Zazzle images, either.
I would like to recompress them with your technique.

Thank you. Yes, a clock face for about a 10 inch diameter clock which I
am making. I think I understand what you are asking. The picture is
geometrically constructed to look this way. The outlines are all
geometry. No tricks.

Thank you very much. There wouldn't be much to put into a tutorial.
Basically, this is just an SDL created mesh with finish { ambient 1 }
and cylinder outlines.
To color the mesh and cylinders, I create a pallet image with each of a
selection of colors labeled with its RGB components. I print the pallet
render to see how the colors will look in ink. When I've got the colors
I want, I then create an array of these pallet entries and color parts
for the mesh with pigment { rgb Pallet[0] }. I have attached an example
of a "pallet render" to clarify.

I used The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/). The important setting here
is the "subsampling" parameter which defaults to 2x2,1x1,1x1 (worst
quality for drawings but nearly no visible difference on photographs)
and should be set to 1x1,1x1,1x1 for drawings.

Wow! Looks fabulous! I have no idea how you were able to do this... Very
atypical kind of image.

Hugo

Thanks a lot. Really, though, nothing spectacular in the construction of
it. Most of the time spent on the image was used adjusting the shape and
colors. The first version was a one color silhouette with the hour marks
along the outside edge.
I do really like it, though, and am considering not giving it up for the
clock. I think I'll make an orange and gray colored version for the
clock and then use my preferred (current) color scheme (with a few added
details) for a full size version.
