I've been messing around with a few ideas for the short code contest.
Unfortunately I've got several scenes that I'm quite pleased with (though I
admit I'm no expert in short code), and I'm not sure which one(s) to enter. Plus
I've kind of got stuck because I can't find any ways to improve them without
needing more code!

Each of these images was done with just 256 bytes of pov code, in fact one is
done in a lot less!

So... which one do you like best? how can I improve the pictures?

As usual, your comments and criticism would help me greatly :)

BTW, for anyone who's wondering what the short code competition is, here's the

The first (city.jpg) looks great, a higher max_trace_level would 
probably be nice but that's a lot of additional characters.  If i should 
guess - a crackle solid heightfield or isosurface?

Obviously, I prefer first one, it's the one that could be considered 
nice as a normal scene.
It's a pattern crackle height field, is it not ?
I think we can see hf artefacts on some edges. Maybe increase resolution.

Yep, a crackle isosurface. It's based on code I did a while ago, although it's
now about 1/10th as much code!

I came up with an alternative to increasing max_trace_level, this view from
street level looking up gets a much nicer effect IMO. Although now the buildings
look a little too simple, I'm gonna try to put windows on them! :)

Those are accuracy errors, because it's an isosurface and I'm using the default
settings. i.e. the whole thing is contained by a unit sphere and has the default
accuracy, so there's rather large errors in it!

I like the city _and_ the egg with nest best. Choosing
among such different pictures is very hard. Actually
I like them all, as it makes me wonder if I could
do this within 256 bytes.
BTW I thought that you were allowed to enter more than
one, so let the jury judge which one is best.

I think I like the first version of this pic more.  There you could see
other buildings reflected in the tops of the buildings in the foreground.
It makes the foreground more interesting IMHO.  That and I like the
gold/brown tones over the colder gray.

I also really like the nest image too.

it should definitely get a showing in the contest. I also like two

No, the only place crackle city has existed was a few postings on this group,
and a few pictures on my website. All of which used many times this amount of
code!

Wow.

I give up.

I spent all weekend trying ideas, and the only halfway decent looking 
things I came up with ran about 350 - 400 bytes and don't begin to 
compare to yours.

Of course, I haven't looked at isosurfaces yet.

OK, maybe I won't give up quite yet.
