I could not resist combining two of Alex Kluchikov's neat isosurfaces.
These were rendered with a 3 pass technique:
1) generating photons with a light source
2) radiosity without light source and plain finishes
3) final render without light source and with HDRI

Neat! I love them. Nice metal-glass combo. Of course caustics look way
too sharp for such a diffuse lighting.

That's right - although you can get caustics even from diffuse lighting
in real life these look quite different, possible solutions would be to
add a light source in the final render to make it look like more direct
light or to have much higher quality radiosity settings to get sharper
shadows from the HDR map.

Great idea! I could not ever imagine the combination of two isosurfaces
could give so wonderful result. And lighting is amazing too. How did you
combine the images you have got with each render pass? Did you use some
image manipulation software like Photoshop or GIMP?

I did not combine images, the render passes are used to generate the
photons and radiosity data files. The images are directly from the last
pass.

Either that or simply smoothen the caustics by using a very large area
light (with the area_light flag in the photons block) in your first pass.

Last time I did a 3-pass rendering, I saved a lot of render-time, but with
an isosurface it must have been slow anyway.. My guess is 6-7 hours with 2
GHz ? I could be wildly mistaken.

I rendered them larger and i don't know the precise time for the final
trace but the photons took about 20 minutes and the radiosity step 3-4
hours. The isosurface function with Tor's improvements is quite fast in
fact.
