Thanks to Mick, Mike, Chris and DT for the help!
Attached is a WIP showing what I've been able to accomplish
so far using the normal value set by the trace function to place
greenery on a landscape based on the slope of the terrain.
Thanks again, guys ...
Aaron

Oh ... and for Stephan from Klippan ... it is a compressed JPEG.

Here is one with slightly improved foliage. And I realized that I
misspelled Stefan in the previous post.

This is really good. A couple of comments:
The sea could be less reflective, and have some much smaller bumps (on the
sub-pixel level). The reflections of the islands are a bit too glassy and
smooth, I think.
The colour of the rock could be changed to a darker, browner shade under the
waterline?
Very impressive overall, though

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with both of your suggestions!
The problem is ... I don't know exactly how to make it look right yet. :)
Anyone out there (Chris?) know how to make realistic looking surf?

Have a look at the MakeCloud2 sea demo scene by Gilles Tran especially the
Sea section begining line 439

As well as Marc's link to Gilles Tran's page, I would recommend Christoph
Hormann's discussion of realistic water at
http://www-public.tu-bs.de:8080/~y0013390/pov/water/index.html.
If you meant by 'surf' the interaction of water and land, the only things I
can think of are a change in the shape of the waves (higher and narrower?)
and a change of texture to a white, non-reflective texture near the
coastline as the water gets shallower. It's pretty difficult to model this
accurately though I think.

The water that I have going there is based on Christoph's water pages.
The transparency of the water right now uses fade_distance and fade_power,
but I might be able to do better by using a texture with gradient y and
the level of filtration controlled that way.
It would be great to be able to have cresting waves and the like,
or even something that just appears to be like that from a distance.
Could this be done with a height_field as the water?

-[It would be great to be able to have cresting waves and the like]-
These could be done with a height-field, so long as there was no point where
the waves were actually 'overhanging'. How to make the hightfield could be a
problem - papers do exist about this kind of thing, but from what I've read,
they have to be quite technical to give good results.
