Hi folks,
This is not exactly a first post, but with those spheres on a plane, it
comes close. I know they're rather boring but the aim is solely to setup a
good light. Something that looks real even on simple objects, and something
easily reusable. The absense of color should help better judge the light.
I'm interested in your critical opinion: On a scale from 0-10 (where 10 is
best) how photorealistic would you rate the image? ...and what can be done
to improve the light?
Thanks,
Hugo

Hey, thats pretty good :)
I would give it an 8 or 9.
Hard to say what needs improvement. Perhaps you could post it with
coloured textures? Not that I don't like it.. but it could be interesting.
Cheers

Thanks, I'd personally give it an 8 as well. Maybe the object is simply too
unreal, and the texture not very common. I mean, who can say if it's metal
or plastic. Maybe that takes the image down?

So far, I don't have any. What colour would you prefer? :o)
Other suggestions, anyone?
They will be appriciated.

Hugo

The image is definitely nice looking, even nice lit, but I find it
difficult to rate because of the unreal context. Did you have a look at
Jaime's syslight include file ? He tried his package on real objects
(screws and nuts on a wooden table), and that makes it far easier to say
whether it looks real or not.
Anyway I give it a 8 too. :-)

How about different colors? Pool balls?
Usually people make images with balls laying
on the pool table in triangle shape. But you
can create that triangle in +Y direction. That
will add some surrealism to the image ;)

At least an 8. I'd give it a 9 only I'm not sure what material those spheres
are meant to be made out of. They look pearlescent, and if that's deliberate
then it's very realistic. But if they're meant to look plastic then there's
something odd going on.
In any case, I think it would be possible to take a photo that looks like
this. Definitely time to try it on more realistic objects.

I think the lighting is stunning!
In contrast to other POVers, I like the idea of B&W POV-Ray scenes. It
gives the scene a much more artistic feel, imho. There are probably other
reasons as well, but I can't seem to verbalize them.

I second that.

I think B&W has as much a place in ray tracing as it does in photography. Though
personally I tend to dislike images in black and white, particularly movies, I
don't know why it just doesn't seem to appeal to me as much as colour.
It is, however, a very good way to test lighting.

For me it's definitely 8-9. The area light is really nice. What tricks
did you use for it?
