Hi, this is something I'm working on for the IRTC "Escape" animations round. The
bikes built entirely from CSG of simple pov objects (lots of cylinders, and some
spheres, superellipsoids, and 2 blobs). It's set up for animation, so the wheels
can roll, the handlebars steer the front wheel, and the suspension can be moved.
Render time was 2 minutes 39 seconds at 1600 x 1200.

I'm very pleased with the result, it's the most complex thing I've ever
hand-coded and it only took about 4 evenings to get it to this stage. :) ...now
all I need is to build the bike's rider!

Comments and criticism would be appreciated.

    That's really nice Tek. I think from the sound of it, your
animation will look good.

   As for bikes, I've ridden a few in my time and I'd love to ride
your design.

Cool! I was aiming for a Manga inspired look for the animation so I think that's
a good thing :)

Very impressive. It is always nice to see what other people create using CSG
only,
gives me hope that I might actualy be able to build my bicycle using said
method.

Did you use any special tricks?

Very nice indeed.  For a model made of primitives CSG it's amazing.  You 
didn't do this with graph paper, eh?  What are the wheels made with, looks 
like an elaborate CSG or even ISO?

No graph paper, just a few very vague sketches to get the overall feel, and
then pure povray. The problem with the modelling on this is it used such
intensive CSG that I couldn't have planned it out much on graph paper,
because so many of the shapes depend upon several objects intersecting in
just the right way. So I used good old-fashioned trial and error.

The wheels are just CSG, I take a cylinder, carve out the side with a torus
to get the cross section shape I want. Then the holes between the spokes are
cut out using three painstakingly arranged squashed cylinders (that's 3 for
each hole), they overlap so you just get a smooth hole shape. I considered
using isosurfaces but they'd render too slow for my animation.

Well this is my first serious attempt at modelling a complex object from
CSG, and it was a lot easier than I expected.

Not really, the only thing I did do a lot was using intersections with the
"inverse" modifier, to cut holes in things. It's a lot more flexible than
using difference. Otherwise just having a good grasp of what objects look
like when they're cut out of each other, and a lot of trial and error to
line things up.

Heh heh, disgusting, isn't it?  When I first started using POV I expected to
be doing most of my modeling in Hamapatch. Now I find myself using a
modeller less & less because POV does so well.  The two things I used the
most in Hamapatch were lathe & extrusion, & POV has it's own lathe that
works great, & prisms can do a lot of what extrude does, so Hamapatch now
gets in the way!

Plus POV has sphere_sweeps, which are incredibly versatile, and the ability
to use all the above plus loops within CSG, which lets me build things that
are far more complex than anything I'd like to attempt in Hamapatch.

About the only time I use a modeller now is to tweak things like Poser
figures that are simply beyond my modeling abilities, and for that I've
started using Wings3d more than Hamapatch.

Thanks to the POV team for such a great tool!
