Just a quick preview of some of the texture and normal changes I've made.

As usual constructive comments welcome

BTW I'm aware that the pigment_map on the red parts needs scaling down, but
I couldn't see it properly until I got to work (my monitor is definitely due
for replacement)

BTW2 Complaints about the design should be addressed to Foster, Rastrick &
Company Ltd. This model was based on a litho (c. 1830) which illustrated an
old article about them.

Looking very nice!

The main "barrel" (no, I'm not that mechanically inclined) looks much
better!

The large chimney/smoke-stack (whatever) isn't quite right yet, though.
Something to perhaps try is layering a granite normal (or maybe something
else) over top of or instead of the bump normal.  I did this with with an
isosurface once, anyhow, and it looked great.  But I've never tried it using
normals.

Everything is looking much better, but you might want to spend a little more
time tweaking the textures.

I think it's called the boiler (... but I could be wrong. I know more about
aircraft than historic steam locomotives; which begs the question: "Why
didn't I model an historic flying machine instead?"
Now, if only I could find a way of getting the shadowing to follow the
normal profile..... ;-)  (anyone mentioning isosurfaces will be taken
outside and shot!)

I had thought of adding a slightly rusty texture and playing with the
normals so I'll run with your ideas for the next couple of days

Ah well, I didn't want to go out and socialise for the next week :-))
