Just some quick tests, nothing really fancy.
The first image took 12 minutes to render and the second image uses no
light source and took less than 10 minutes (both use +a0.1).

Hmm.. The first image use light_source + rad ? Was that to achieve the
specular highlights? I think the white balls on the character are from the
radiosity, and the grey lines on his legs are from the light_source..

Yes.

It's to achieve a good result fast. Without using a light source it would
render that scene for two weeks and there would still be artifacts.
Of course highlights are nice too.

No, they are all highlights. It's just that the boots are not so shiny... :P

I realy like the lighting in this one, its got a nice soft glow to it,
like the room he's in was totaly dark and the gun is the only light soarce.

Well, that's exactly what I did.
There's an area light at the fire of the gun, and the rest of the lighting
comes from radiosity calculations.
