I am going through and rerendering/rewriting some images for the 10 best
effort, and I just wondered if the glaring error in this image is a glaring
as I think it is. If you immediately see something that just doesn't work in
this, please tell me what it is. I'm not going to say anything that will
prejudice you.

Hmm. The asteroid/rock/planet/whatever that is in the center of the
explosion looks a little too smooth. It depends on what the scale is and
what stage the explosion is at, but generally you'd want a bit more breakup
on the main object.

The only things that don't work for me is that the explosion is too
spherical, it should be replaced with scattering media (or maybe a
combination of absorption and emission media if you dont want it to check
for light source visibility), and the rock peices close up have no shading
(could be fixed with a dim shadowless light off to the side somewhere, or
radiosity if you wanted to slow down the render a lot.)

Otherwise, it's sorta cool.

It's not an explosion, it's a spinning ball of lava formed by continuing
impacts of asteroids. But at least you didn't immediately see the problem I
was thinking about.

I can see some strange black stripes in your picture, but maybe that's
simply due to jpeg compression...

No, that seems to be from Chris's Galaxy include.

Since I decided to fix the problem, I can say what it was. Several of
the silhouetted asteroids were identical. I only have three shapes and I
didn't rotate them randomly enough.

Oh, heh heh, actually, I *did* notice that, at one point, but didn't really
notice it *enough* to think any more of it.

Well, here is the fixed version, minus the off angle that I intend to
fill with something interesting. I've decided that the black lines are not
Chris's fault after all, they seem to be the edges of my isosurface media
container. I think I will try changing that to a sphere. There was a reason
I didn't do that before, maybe I can overcome that now.

I know this is a little late (I'm trying to catch up on 3 years worth of awesome
pictures)

- but -

This is awesome! I'm gonna use it as my desktop background for a while, I
think. Although, I did like the angle of the first one better.
