hi,

I've simply cut'n'paste your reply here.

no. I understood CC to mean that one set of files gets compared with two
different executables. only v3.7 '/scenes/' scenes are used.

that would only mean replacing a few paths and the names of the executables,
more below.

at this point, as mentioned, it's v basic, no error handling, nothing, for now
I've simply .. thrown in a possible framework to see whether there's an use for
it.

the '/scripts/' stuff does not use the 'recommended' settings from the scene,
afaik.

thank you! will incorporate '-j' and think about '-wt'; optional perhaps?

there is no analysis of the (given) command-line options. I'm thinking (and
would prefer) a simple UI utility to manipulate individual scene settings in the
database.
(directories can be enabled/disabled, which may be handy)

ok.

that's for actual image compare. there may also be milage in extracting
information from the output of, for instance, (ImageMagick) 'identify -verbose'.
 :-)

[v3.8 stuff snipped]

looked productive to me. :-)

no, it's an 'unofficial' alpha.10064268. re the below, would consider using a
more up-to-date version.

again, although the scripts are (as yet) in no fit state, using a different
version of POV-Ray will only need changing a file name, and to use scenes
different from v3.7 also is just a matter of adjusting paths. ideally those
data (names of exectuables, etc) ought to be in the db too; but then we'd need
to talk (re)design "properly".

I've made several changes and the whole thing is now a two-step process: create
a db, and run it.

see 'wtlimit'. :-)

the archive contains a 'readme.txt' detailing the few edits needed to "install"
the code. and I meant to mention in the 'readme' - the work directory must not
exist, ie must be deleted between successive runs.

I also forgot to include a whole paragraph regarding results, plus found typos.
I copy the amended 'readme' below, rather than posting another archive.

btw, to make the s/ware work with 'povr', requires the '/scenes/' directory to
contain directories only. move 'biscuit.pov' into a sub-directory. create a
'previews' directory (that is the "marker" the script looks for). (I checked it
works, albeit with two identical 'povr' programs)

# ------------------------------------------------------------------------
setting up, by script.

you will neeed to create two directories, one for the scripts, one for
the database(s); you could make both the same.

extract the archive in the script directory.

- cimkdb.sh

the directories in lines 10 and 11 need to be changed to the above.
'store_db' for the databases, 'store_ec' for external code/scripts.

in line 34 you can change the "preferred" work directory for when
jobs get run. I use '/tmp/cmpimg/' because '/tmp/' is set up to
  "live" in RAM.

- cirundb.sh

  change 'store_ec' in line 11.

the script always creates an archive of the run's data. if that is
unwanted, you could insert an 'exit 0' before line 66.

- init-db.sql

there are a couple of defaults you may wish to adjust. currently,
jobs run without showing a display/render window, without limit on
the number of worker threads, and generating log information; also,
the set of "standard" (POV-Ray) CLI options is given here.
see the comments for table 'misckv' to make necessary changes.

- mkcmpimg.tcl

you will need to provide the names of the two POV-Ray executables
which are to be compared, and you may need/want to use different
  "tags" to distinguish them.

lines 14 and 15 contain the relevant data, both two-element lists.
the tags are used as prefixes for the (temporary) image files.

how it works.

it is now a two step process. create a database for a given POV-Ray
distribution '/scenes/' directory, and "run the database". in between,
you may wish to update individual scenes in the db, eg if specific
option switches are required. the db files are always named with the
version number grabbed from the directory, but they can be renamed if
necessary.

for example (from the script directory):

  $ ./cimkdb.sh /usr/local/share/povray-3.7/scenes/

(an override for the default work directory can be given as second arg)

the database can now be run as often as required.

  $ ./cirundb.sh ~/.local/share/cmpimg/civ3.7.sqlite

you will have to substitute the path of course.

the results are left in the work directory.
if logging was not disabled, there will be two new files for every
"active" scene, eg 'biscuit.pov' now has 'ci_biscuit.png', output by
the 'montage' command, and 'ci_biscuit.txt.xz', which is POV-Ray's
'all_file' output, compressed. (view with 'xzless')
a compressed archive of the work directory too is left in the work
directory. it is named 'ciYYMMDDHHMM.tar.xz', where the date/time is
from when 'cirundb.sh' was started.

the work directory must be deleted before the next run.

run either script without any arguments to see the required command
line, including the options.

finally, there is, as yet, no documentation (although all scripts are
commented), and there is very little error handling, and no attempt at
making the scripts "resiliant".

a simple (GUI) frontend for database maintenance is (still) on the
drawing board; it is not high priority since everything can be done
easily using the 'sqlite3' shell.

more changes. "installing" is a matter of setting a couple of directories and
listing available POV-Ray programs, essentially. once set up, the POV-Rays and
database to use, plus a few runtime options, are chosen from an UI which
executes the "job". comments and feedback, please.

the "problem" with the existing code is that the same command-line is built for
both (POV-Ray) executables. to build version-specific command-lines I need
additional information about which CLI option came into use when. so far I
have:

v 3.8 - ac am3 cc ss

v 3.7 - ag bm2 bs gp hr mi wt

does anyone ("hey WFP" ;-)) know of a list of new option switches, by POV-Ray
version? can anyone (please) help by adding stuff I missed? also, ideally, I'd
like info going back to at least v 3.5. TIA.

The documentation for v3.8 is pretty good, but still over the past
decade or more the tendency has been to leave the flag and ini parsing
in place so old stuff keeps running. Sometimes you get a warning the
feature is obsolete or something, but not always. What I see happening
is folks continuing to use flags which have long not worked. To no large
harm for long time users, but I think stuff like this is really
confusing to newer users.

The best I can easily offer is the povr source code and the files:

  <install>/source/frontend/processrenderoptions.cpp

and

  <install>/source/povms/povmsid.h

The former has the render options which work for povr and with the
exception of the two real time rendering flags. If memory servers the
rest at I think what does something in the current v3.8. I've taken a
harder line with povr. If the flag no longer does anything, povr dies.
Remember any ini option can be specified on the command line and a few
ini options have no short flags - File_Gamma is one of those I hit
pretty often.

I also change the flags as specified to lower case over upper because
the case in processrenderoptions.cpp is what shows up in the error
messages (though either case works) and lower case flags more natural in
unix like environments I think.

For unix there are too the unix only flags (-y). povr -help to see
those, and some of those like -authors are povr only critters.

The file povmsid.h is where other previous to me documented some
features working, not or unused (or sometimes used only internally). I
extended this convention by sticking some of my comments in there too.
The IDs there correspond to options.

With older versions suppose these files might help. Documentation for
those versions too as folks have tried to update to match, but probably
like v3.8 there are flags floating around that no longer do anything. I
don't have any ready docs for those.

Aside: I've played a little with now extended and perhaps eventually,
replacement options parsing. One of the things you run into for example
is someone can have coded up +am5 accidentally. No errors, no warnings.
In v3.7 this, IIRC, defaults to am2. In recent v3.8, it defaults to am3.
Folks can get differences in result and not easily know why (that AA
changed is in the output - if you happen to have both handy to compare).

With povr, if you specify +am5, you get:

Command line parameter: +am5
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'pov_base::Exception'
what(): Must have trailing integer values of 1,2 or 3 as in +am2.
Aborted (core dumped)

The core dump isn't ideal, but I'll take it over no error at all.

This functionality might or might not be in the last tarball I posted -
I don't remember. I do remember I haven't added the extended
parsing/checking to all the flags as yet. There is too the unix flags
getting handled and parsed somewhere else in the code. Not yet sure what
to aim for in the end. :-)

am surprised that there is no (simple) table of features/switches by version.

thanks. "bedtime reading". :-)

think that should be the default anyway, and for POV-Ray "proper".

yes. the "favourite" 'declare=X=Y' came in at 3.5, as did, apparently writing
jpg and tiff.

that's another item I'd like to establish a "time line" for -- output image
formats/options.

not ideal perhaps, but the correct course of action, imnsvho :-). and
(repeating myself) POV-Ray too ought to behave that way.

thanks for reply and pointers (to files).

note if anyone's playing with the 'cmpimg' s/ware, below is a list of (three)

[*] reverse order so line numbers aren't affected.
