I now tried this too and found that in my case, the POV files
were still associated with my 3.6 installation. Associating it
with pvengine64.exe did not work, associating it with pvengine.exe
worked but connect to the render command instead of open (???).
The command under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\povfile\shell\Open\command
appeared to be correct. After deleting
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pov\UserChoice
everything worked fine (Windows 7 x64). So possibly Windows got confused
with an earlier manual association, but the behavior was still strange.

I am not getting any file association with .pov files with both RC4 and RC5.
RC3 and earlier did this okay.
If I open a .pov file I get the windows pop-up asking me to pick a program
or search for one and have to do it manually.
I thought it was perhaps my windows installation causing this but maybe its
not?

I am getting something similar. If I select a pov file and open it, it
opens with notepad. (I think that I set this manually a while ago.) If I
use "open with" I get the option of opening it with RC3 or ver 3.5.
I still have 3.5 in case I want to use Moray.
I cannot say what it did before as I hardly ever open pov files that way.

In my computer the command under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\povfile\shell\Open\command
points to the deleted folder of RC4 and I cannot modify that. The Modify-command
in regedit is greyed out.

I fixed the path in the command under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\povfile\shell\Open\command
but I cannot delete the entry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pov\UserChoice
I can edit this entry, but what should I write in it?
My computer also executes the Render command in pvengine.exe by double-clicking
on a .pov-file.

Same for me on Windows 7 x64. I had not tested this before because I
never open pov files this way, but no program is recognized and has to
be selected manually. I don't know how it was with older versions.

installed, and have had no issues. I get the following error message:
The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000005) occurred in the
application at location 0x00000000.
