The area light doesn't cast soft shadows. Look like only a few points
are used. Even using a really high number of for the number of light
points doesn't help much.

adaptive 2 gives much smoother shadows, but still the result is worse
than in 3.6.

When? I've reported this problem twice, and no one could be bothered to
acknowledge it.

What gives?

It was also fixed when you first reported it, but a subsequent change broke
the fix without my noticing it.

Sorry, must have slipped up. I do make an effort to respond to reports once
I've located and/or fixed the problem.

Please check out the beta test group welcome message. I know it is a very
"old" post, but it basically still applies :-)

Normally, I wouldn't expect a reply, but...

The first time I posted, you wanted a minimal scene. I posted a minimal
scene. Beta 3 came around and problem was still there, I posted the
problem, and an image illustrating the problem. It must have been lost
in the shuffle. This post appears, and I figure either its just
something thats going to take a while to fix, or the post was ignored,
but after seeing Chris reply with it being fixed, I felt maybe my post
was ignored becase I made a second post about the same problem...

No big deal.. Really.

It seems you're working very hard and doing a great job, I think you are
allowed to slip up :-)
