past perhaps I've never gone above 2 for it. Only found this out in the
course of helping someone else out.

And not platform specific on Linux RH6.2 320M RAM PII 266 - POV-Ray 3.5 beta RC4

With some further experimentation I find that it renders a complete scene 
and outputs a readable ppm file before I get the segmentation/core dump
message.  The output file is complete and the size it should be and gives
no errors on reading with ImageMagic.
