It's quite possible that I've missed some of the fixes that went in in
beta 9, since the change log contained several items that didn't
describe the symptoms that they were fixing.

This does not crash in beta9. At least not with the MSVC compile.

It is a precision issue: Only if there are certain input and output values
the power function will raise a signal which is not caught by POV-Ray.

No, this still doesn't work in my beta 9.
It keeps a single instance, always.

For me it works only if I activate "Keep Single Instance" and deactivate it
again. After that I can start more than one instance.

  Just tested it on beta9 (intel compile) and it still crashes (when used
in the way I described in the original report).

It crashes on my PC (Win Me, beta9.icl) if sin(X) is negative.
So, the following code also crashes.
//-----------
#declare X = .1;
#while(X <= 4)
  sphere { <X, (-0.4)^(-0.4), -.1>, .05 pigment { rgb 1 } }
  #declare X = X+.1;
#end
//-----------

In this case, POV-Ray should stop the rendering with an error message.

Fixed for next time.

Change 1297 by parkerr on 2001/12/26 16:44:11

	If a declare doesn't start with a '#' don't allow the optional
	semicolons. This shouldn't be a problem, as the hash-less syntax
	has been deprecated for at least two versions now and the optional
	semicolons are new with this version.

	This is a roundabout bugfix for a problem where declare without the
	hash would ignore the following token.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not but POV-Ray spits out a bunch of
information in the message window on the Macintosh version. I have
posted a screenshot of the warnings generated at the end of a trace. I
think it is reporting on information for each object in the scene.

On a related note, it'd be helpful if words such as "declare" weren't
syntax-highlighted when they didn't have the #.
