The following sections of the help documents use the word "artefact" as
opposed to "artifact."

4.1.2
4.1.3 - In two locations
6.5.4.5.3
3.4.4.7

I hope this isn't something like the British spelling of this word. My
spellchecker returns "artifact" as the proper spelling.

There was discussion on this during writing of the documentation, i think
both versions can be used although i personally prefer 'artefact'
(probably also because it's the same in german)

A common spelling in all parts would be good so maybe ingo could just do a
'search & replace'.

Merriam-Webster says this:

    One entry found for artefact.

        chiefly British variant of ARTIFACT

So I guess both are acceptable.

Agreed. (Not that my personal taste matters much)
