Can anyone recommend and free, preferably open source Technical
ComputingMathematical ComputingMathematica Like Programs the use with POV.
I used a student version of Mathematica (Version 4.0) when I was in school,
but am in a profession now that doesn't use it, so I don't really feel like
purchaseing a 2,000 dollar license ( a new computer costs less).
Can anybody recommend and free or open source programs similar to this?

if you are in a profession that doesn t use it , that means that you don t
need it ..so the best program is ..

seriously,
well, i dont think that there is an equivalent to mathematica, in fact that
depends of what you calculate by mathematica.
if it is just seeing graphics, or did made lot of improper integrals, or
the use of complexes.. etc ...

I've never used Mathematica, but I've had good luck with these programs:
yacas: http://yacas.sourceforge.net/homepage.html
octave: http://www.gnu.org/software/octave
Note that yacas is probably closer to what you are looking for; octave is
more of a matlab clone.
