Store the last X rendered images in some sort of memory bin you mean,
without knowing how POV-ray stores the render information I couldn't
comment on the feasibility of that, it may use to much memory. Personally,
arguments that POV-ray is not an image viewer not withstanding, I still
think that reading the saved image file to display with a caveat may be
the quickest way of doing it. But I'm not going to argue anymore; either
something happens or it doesn't. If it does I don't care how it's
accomplished; if it doesn't I'll just have to live with it, or start
looking at the code and teach myself how to do it :)
