With an actual hard disk with actual platters you would be lucky to get a  
sustained transfer rate of 100 MB/s (1 Gb/s). Burst rates can be much  
higher, though.

SSD is another matter. The good ones can have sustained transfer rates  
that push the limits of SATA/300.
