I'm just surprised that they use a number at all; obviously cheap
programmers with a "you were called by [insert phone number]" script that
only accepts a valid number.

Ah tell me about it my company has just switched from Big Phone Company to
Little Phone Company and we've lost the ability to determine last caller
or caller id. LPC were quite surprised about this as all services should
be moved over as standard; so they called up BPC who told them they
couldn't transfer these services due to the type of line we have coming
in. So BPC can do it when we're with them, but can't do it when we're not.
Ah nothing like ensuring a level playing field when denationalising a
monopoly company :-)
