This is a tired idea for a picture but an excellent subject for cg. This
is the king of idea that gets my imagination going thinking about all of
the possible little intricate details. Unfortunately, there are no
details here. The high resolution map used for the Earth makes the space
colony look even less detailed by comparison.

I would have said the opposite, the detail of the buildings on the space station
make the texture on the earth look too simple and unrealistic, paricularly the
oceans, it's obviously just a photo (plus it seems to have ambient light on it
which is one of my pet hates in planet renders!).
I have to say I really like this picture. The materials on the buildings are
fantastic, and the glass aroung them feels right. I also love the perspective of
the shot, it adds a good sense of depth. Yes it's an old idea, and this is not
the best version of it that I've seen, but it is a very unusual take on the
topic of "architecture". Again, choice of subject is what I liked about this
image rather than the interpretation of that subject.
Though I'm a little surprised it came so high in the final judging. This idea
could have been done better, particularly from a technical point of view. The
textures are poor on everything apart from the buildings, and there's a lot of
details missing.

I suppose it is a nice fantasy, have the urban atmosphere and be
floating in space. Stand on your balcony and look down on earth.
Otherwise I find the idea quite improbable as a solution to a space
shortage. Plus, that earth doesn't look too crowded.

Agreed. It was one of the handful that got away from "here's a building"
mold.

Also agreed. But then, there were a lot of images in this round that
surprised me, both high and low. Tough round to score, and a lot of
different takes on scoring.
But that's what makes it interesting!

Heh heh, and your image still has me doing a double-take every time I'm on
the viewing page. The thumbnail just looks like it has writing on it. Can
you re-do it so the stairs spell out Pov-Ray?
