I just entered this topic into the topic suggestion system and am very
excited that I might some day get to see the results. If you like this topic
(or don't), go to the topic suggestion system and vote for (or against) it.
I don't know if it is proper to post this kind of message here, but I am
really intrigued by this topic.
The topic is:
Classic Sci-fi
Martians, rocketships, killer robots, flying saucers, ray-guns! Sci-fi
*before* CG.
Any opinions?

Well, Science Fiction was done for September-October of 1996. I'm not sure
how many times a repeated topic has been put up.

True, but I'm not sure that the topics are repetitious. They merely overlap.
The topics Nature, Elements, and Water were used consecutively.
I think that the most interesting topics are ones to which a degree of
emotion and prejudice have been attached. New ideas are always nice, but an
artist can have a powerful effect on a viewer by creating a representation
of an idea which already exists in the viewers mind. To me, an excellent
topic is one that conjures up similar images in many people's minds.
A topic like Hell is a good example. Most people, religious or not,
associate strong images with Hell. An artist can use these images to get a
strong reaction from the viewer or, better yet, twist common notions about
Hell to reflect his own views on the subject while still communicating to
the viewer directly through the use of accepted imagery.
I believe that the topic Classic Sci-fi could be used in this way without
being provocative enough to effect voting. Unlike other topics to which
strong imagery is attached like war or sex, classic sci-fi is not
contemporary and therefore the ideas about it remain fairly constant.

I like it! :)
They've done sci-fi before, but I think most of the current IRTC entrants
weren't making images back then (including me), so it would be great to see what
current povvers produce for that topic. Plus the technology has improved so much
since then, with radiosity, iso surfaces, functions, and more than 10 times the
CPU power!
I particularly like the "before CG" bit, that would make a nice change from the
current sci-fi influences that are around. There'd be some great entries with
flying saucers on strings in an Ed Wood style!
...though the fact that I've just come up with a nice space ship (posted to
p.b.i) might mean I'm a bit biased ;)

Another bit of fun would be to go back to the original comic or novel which
inspired a classic sci-fi movie and recreate the ship, robot, etc. from the
source with modern technology and without the constraints of budget and
simple model-building tools.

That's a great idea! Though I'm not sure we could necessarily improve the
original (just look at the re-make of Lost In Space). And I confess I tend not
to read the book if I've already seen the movie!
It would be cool to try to come up with a modern version of Tron! :)
