... or do a remarkable number of images seem wilfully off-topic this round?
(not to mention a noticeable lack of anti-aliasing).

Strange.

I'm downloading them all now, I looked at a one and thought "that has
nothing to do with the round" (the one with the external view of the house?)

The rest I can, so far, see the contrasts in, some of them are fairly clever
too. I guess I'll find more o-t ones as I download and view more, I'll get
back to you :)

Pssst... Don't tell anyone but Gilles cheats. He has real artistic talent.

Ahh, so that's how he does it...

OK, I looked through all the images, and I have to agree. There are some
really strange images that don't seem to have any kind of contrast in them,
for example, ones like test.jpg. One of them looks like it's been
completely post processed, one of them looks like it wasn't even rendered, a
lot of them have a lack of anti-aliasing as you mentioned, and there are
some that don't seem to fit the theme at all.

That said, there are some VERY nice renderings that really stand out and fit
the topic well. There are also some very clever ideas that people have come
up with for contrasts, like the Escher'esque "hand holding silvered ball"
one, and of course Gilles' rendering which I'm just drooling over at the
moment.

Something about that image actually, it took me a while to notice the toilet
was being sidelit by the TV in the other room (probably because I was just
drooling over the image at first, hehe), which made me realise there's
actually a walk way there! LOL, at first I'd thought they were completely
closed off rooms, not joined, and he was looking at her from an adjacent
apartment on the TV, then I realised they were joined, and he was looking at
her in the room, but they're in the same apartment... LOL... that didn't
make any sense did it?

Annnnyywaayyy... *goes back to looking through the images* I think I'm
going to have to read a lot of these text files carefully so that I actually
get the contrasts in some of these images.

The off-topic thing is weird - looking over my entries for previous irtc
entries, 3/7 of them could easily have been submitted for this round -
"contrasts" is a fairly inclusive topic as well as being a naturally
occuring theme in many compositions. As for the lack of AA, it isn't
reserved for the sub-standard images. A lot of pics that obviously required
a lot of work and effort are marred by this.

Yes - although IMHO and except in specific circumstances, I don't think it
should be necessery to go to the text file to work out whether an image is
on-topic or not. Oh well.

Is that some kind of commercial package or plugin?

Well, that's what I thought too... I figured you should be able to see the
contrasts in the image anyway, but I thought perhaps there was something
obvious I'd missed in a few of them.

Perhaps the contrast comes from the fact that the image has nothing to
do with the topic?
