Yes, it is. The relatively compact (relative to an XML representation)
scene structures in memory can take up a great deal of space. You can
easily get binary files of several hundred MB, or XML files of over a GB.

But XML isn't a format, it's a markup language. Even if you put your
data in XML, other programs will need to know how to handle that data in
order to make use of it. You just have a bulkier, less efficient method
of transferring data.
