As the paper mentions, it is more restrictive than REYES, but is the 
same type used in Maya, so in practice it may not be as restrictive as 
it first seems.

In a near-term official version, it is unlikely. 3.5 is near the end of 
life for this code-base, there are plans for a redesign and rewrite. 
There's several patch writers interested in it though, and the POV Team 
is aware of it. I'm going to try to implement it in my own raytracer, if 
I succeed I will get to work on a POV patch. This and Schaufler and 
Jensen's point geometry raytracing algorithm both look quite 
interesting. (In fact, I've been wondering if the point geometry 
rendering could be extended with a similar feature, generating 
additional displaced points on the fly.)
