It's from the triangle formula n * (n+1) / 2.

Each plant uses a horrendous amount of memory, so I only planted enough
to fit into the wedge visible to the camera.  I estimated that about 25
rows (325 plants) would fit into memory, and then I saw the swap file
fill up, so I cut it back to 22 rows, which works out to 253 plants.
