On a 32 bits system, it can crash if the scene demand more than 4 Gb.
Not a POV-Ray limit, but a system whide limitation.
On a 64 bits system, the actual limit is MUCH MUCH larger at more than
16 PETA bytes... Or as much RAM plus any swap/page file you can manage
to get.
