I thought it was pretty simple: in the USA (and Canada?), you say
"math"; in the rest of the world, it's "maths." Same idea as with
colo(u)r and alumin(i)um. It's not a controversy unless you choose to
make it one.
(With Canada, I'm never sure. They are linked to the UK, yet are so
much like USAmericans.)
