not sure but thinking there's a problem with area_illumination when
using it with scattering media ...

i first gathered radiosity data without using area_light then used saved
rad data in a separate run.

in the first image with area_illumination off you see what it /should/
look like ... the second image (screen shot because of excessive render
time) shows how the scattering media blooms out. i only let it run long
enough to show the problem

i did a little troubleshooting to try to eliminate some of the things i
/thought/ i may have been doing to contribute to the problem. during the
radiosity gather i have a couple of no_image no_reflection no_shadow
objects as radiosity helpers that are /not/ present in the scene during
the media run ... that didn't make the bloom go away. the only thing
that makes it go away is area_illumination off. is this a problem or
should i /not/ be using area_illumination with scattering media?

same behavior with both uberpov and povray:

ash@linux-c2bm:~/POV-Ray/Source $ uberpov --version
UberPOV 1.37.1.0

ash@linux-c2bm:~/POV-Ray/Source $ povray --version
POV-Ray 3.7.1-alpha.8017570.unofficial

btw: discovered this after a 114+ hour beauty run ... needless to say
(but in gonna say it) i was bummed out (don't get pissed off much these
day) :-)
