Are you using POV-Ray 3.6?

If so, you might be seeing one of two known bugs, FS#162 and FS#200, 
that have been fixed in POV-Ray 3.7 (see http://bugs.povray.org/task/162 
and http://bugs.povray.org/task/200, respectively).

If not, I'd be interested in the details.
