Because, despite JIT-compilers, C++ is still more performant on the
major target platforms (currently Windows and Linux), and maintaining a
Java port besides the C++ version would be a major PITA?
I'd rather modify some existing C++ compiler to generate JVM bytecode -
that might turn out to be less of an effort, at least in the long run.
But of course you're free to do your own Java-port of POV-Ray :-P
