I did a similar cut with csg a long time ago:

(object is inside a sphere of radius 1, <0,0,0> is the center of the
greatest circle)
CSG is simpler than mesh when you need an interior.
You need an environment to reflect, and raise the trace level (really
raise it, 5 is far from enough with such gem's cut)
