Actually, thinking on it, I think it's more that you made the exact same 
response in all seriousness to the exact same sort of complaint that I've 
made before. And lots of other people would make this exact same response to 
lots of people making similar complaints.  So even with a smiley, it wasn't 
obvious that *this* time you were joking.
