Because it doesn't know how to index them.

It knows where to look in a jpeg to get the metadata. It knows where to look 
in a Word file to understand when something is in a different language. You 
don't want search finding "Fred" in a jpeg image body, or "Fred" in a word 
document in Big-5.

You have to tell the search engine that .m files can be indexed like text.
