I installed a local version of boost 1.38 (in /usr/local/...)
then configure povray with

--with-boost=/usr/local
(and --disable-io-restrictions, but that's a personal taste)

No problem. (and yes, I'm on ubuntu amd64, currently 9.04)
Now, beta 34 has expired...
